A Bag for HOPE

Welcome to

A bag for hope

It started with two women sewing scraps of fabric in a living room. They had no idea what they were about to give birth to.

Our beginnings and now

Lynne Corbett and Libby Penrod are the founders of A Bag for Hope.

Lynne, a retired teacher, knew of a group of women who had sewed and sold handmade items to raise funds for their local food bank. Lynne thought that concept could be used in Tallahassee to raise money for children in need. Collaborating with her friend, Libby Penrod, a retired nurse and seamstress with ties to Family Promise (formerly The Hope Community) the two of them had their first sale, raising $130. That was in 2009.

Today the group has grown to 30+ sewers and has raised over $150,000 to provide the children of Family Promise with needed items. The group is housed in a room generously provided by Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee where they sort and store donated fabrics and completed items.

The money raised has established a library and completed a playground. It provides for restoring lost documentation such as birth certificates or social security cards. It makes participating possible by purchasing prom clothing and paying camp expenses. It allows a child to succeed by purchasing eye glasses, school supplies and uniforms. In other words, while the parent is getting back on their feet, a child’s world is able go on.

How to join us

Donations of fabric

We depend on donations of new fabric ¼ yard or greater. Most helpful is the weight of fabric you would use for quilting, crafts or children’s items and clothing. Canvas and Denim, we can use for larger totes or beach bags. If we can’t utilize a portion of your donation we will send it along to another good cause.

Donations of talent

We can use willing sewers of all skill levels. What you make and how much you produce is up to you. You will do your sewing at home and bring it to the studio for pricing and stocking. There is an opportunity to work in the studio weekly; tagging, pricing, and stocking items for sale; sorting and shelving fabric; and packing and delivering items to an event. We take shifts setting up, selling and closing down at craft events.

Monetary Donations

Financial donations allow us to purchase popular fabrics, such as college motifs, and notions – thread, zippers, batting, etc.
